Love the one you’re with

On Sunday night, I had the joy of seeing my singer-songwriter friend in concert, something I feel lucky to do every time her tour brings her to town. At the end, Susan invited four other women to grab their instruments, get up on stage, and do a five-woman jam to “Love the One You’re With.” Two guitars, a keyboard, drums, and a sax … amazing!

By the end, we were all on our feet, singing at the top of our lungs:

Well there’s a road …. in the distant … uh …
And the eagle flies with the dove
(louder now, with confidence)
AND IF YOU CAN’T BE
WITH THE ONE YOU LOVE, HONEY
LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH
LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH

At that moment, I had two revelations:

  1. I have no idea what the lyrics are to this song.
  2. This is actually a terrible song.

(Do you know the lyrics? Check them out below.)

So maybe it’s not the worst song ever. Three days later, Love the One You’re With is still on repeat in my head, and when you’re singing about love all the time, it starts to sink in:

Maybe this is more than an earworm.
Maybe there’s a bigger meaning here.

So I started looking for signs.

Lately, I have been focused on finishing up the final details Echo’s new class and going door to door, encouraging people to vote. I’ve been out talking with people who weren’t always happy to see me, but it felt so good to look for common ground and give people something to smile about.

The synchronicity of this got me thinking about the people I’ve loved who have gone on to the afterlife, and how losing them has made me feel even more committed to loving the people around me. Neighbors, friends, family, the person checking out my groceries, my local librarian, yup, even the person who honked at me when I was zoned out and didn’t notice the light had turned green – if I can’t be with the ones I love, there are so many people right next to me who could benefit from some extra love.

As for the rose in a fisted glove (the real lyrics to this song!), I’ve got some ideas about that. Stop by Facebook if you want to chat and sing along.

And if you’ve got some extra to give today, honey, love the ones you’re with.

Dut-dut-dut! Dut-dut-dut!

Together.

Love the One You’re With
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

If you’re down, and confused and you don’t remember, who you’re talking to.
Concentration slips away cause your baby is so far away.
And there’s a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can’t be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with,
love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with.

Don’t be angry, don’t be sad, don’t sit crying over good times you had.
There’s a girl, right next to you and she’s just waiting for something to do.
And there’s a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can’t be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with,
love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with.

Turn your heartache right into joy. She’s a girl and you’re a boy.
So get it together, make it nice and you won’t need any more advice.
And there’s a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can’t be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you’re with,
love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with, love the one you’re with.
